January 26, 2012

Creative State MichiganArtServe Michigan has released Creative State Michigan, a new resource for information on how the arts, culture, arts education and creative industries impact Michigan and its communities. The report and accompanying website use information from the Michigan Cultural Data Project and other sources to report on arts and culture’s role in creating jobs, tax revenue, and vibrant communities across the state.

Creative State Michigan (www.creativestatemi.org) analyzes Michigan CDP data from 211 arts and cultural organizations to demonstrate the significant impact of the sector on the state’s economy, education, and communities. For every $1 invested by the state, the sector contributed $51 to the Michigan economy in programmatic and operational spending. In 2009, the sector paid $152 million in salaries for 15,560 jobs.

Using American’s for the Arts’ Creative Industries data, Creative State Michigan also finds that from 2006 to 2010, the number of arts-related jobs increased by 4 percent in Michigan, while arts-related businesses increased by 43 percent. ArtServe Michigan will be updating Creative State Michigan on a regular basis.
